Why Are My Brakes Grinding?

Mechanic Working On Brakes
Why are your brakes grinding when stopping on the Milwaukee roads? If your brakes are making a grinding noise or something similar, then you’ll want to schedule service as this could be caused by several different factors. Luckily, the service team at Morrie's West Bend Honda has put together a helpful guide on what’s likely the cause of your brakes grinding and what you can do about it.

Why Are My Brakes Grinding When Stopping?

If you’re driving around Brookfield and notice that your brakes are making a grinding noise only when you come to a stop, then this can be due to specific reasons. Here are some common causes that lead to brakes grinding when stopping:

  • Brake Scrubbing: Your brake pads will lose thickness over time, which will cause them to make a squealing or grinding noise when they rub together. This is what’s commonly referred to as “brake scrubbing”.
  • Brake Disc & Caliper Issues: A slightly sharper grinding sound coming from your brakes could mean that your brake disc and calipers are at fault. This can cause a rumbling in your brake pedal, which you’ll usually notice as you drive around Hartford. The brake pad, disc, or rotor may need to be replaced if this is happening.
  • Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): Your ABS activates when you put full pressure on the brakes, and this can usually result in brake pedal vibrations. This can also cause a grinding sound, but this is a more rare incident.

Why Are My Brakes Grinding When Driving?

Sometimes, you may instead your brakes making a grinding noise as you drive around West Bend instead of when you stop. This noise can be caused by rocks and other kinds of road debris bouncing off of your Honda vehicle’s caliper and/or rotor. While this is a relatively easy fix, we still recommend servicing your vehicle right away if you hear this sound.
